2008
January 3rd, 2008
I’ve been spending time in blog land catching up with everyone after the holidays. Kristin Armstrong blogged about what she does in terms of goals for the new year. She makes a list like the one I’ve done below. I liked her idea, so I went with it.
Things I Should Do/Be
A good wife, daughter, sister, friend – I’ll be these things by freeing up time that I would normally spend in my own little world to be with my friends and family. I’ll focus on worrying less, understanding more, doing nice things here and there, listening, and just loving.
A runner – Time for me to embrace what I am at heart, I’ll be making daily efforts to make myself actually believe I am a runner. Running really helps me to be the person I want to be.
A hard worker – Here’s to me not getting lost in the land of “I’ll do it tomorrow” anymore. I also hope that I don’t take any hookie days from work in 2008.
A good Christian – I’ll be praying, thanking, and going to church in 2008.
Things I Want to Do/Be
A marathoner – I’ve already registered for a few ½ marathons and I’m beginning to train for a full marathon. I’m really excited for my first marathon to be the New York City Marathon.
A piano player – Hopefully I sign up for lessons. I’ve wanted to be a piano player for a long time, as long as I can remember. I’ve always been so shy when it comes to singing or playing music. Not sure why, but this year will be different.
A knitter – I’m learning to knit – on my own, and it’s hard. I hope that within the year I’ll get much better.
Things that Scare the Crap Out of Me, but Maybe I Can Do/Be them
A college graduate – I’m almost there, just need to finish. Don’t know why it scares me so bad exactly, but hopefully I’ll be over that in time to graduate. That might not be in 2008 but at least I’m resolved to make efforts towards getting there this year.
Things I Already Am/Do but Don’t Live Like I Am/Do
A confident young woman
A financially stable person
enough said!

Very nice. One of your comments really stands out to me, “not getting lost in the land of tomorrow”. I am great at procrastination. If there were a career in it, I would be its founder and CEO. Since there isn’t, I’ve developed a small mantra to avoid my avoidance tendencies: “If not me, then who?”. This tiny voice in my head chimes up when my eyes see the kitchen floor needs sweeping but my feet keep walking by. Somehow, sometimes, this helps just a little bit. Good luck with your goals!

Your goals are wonderful! Maybe I’ll see you at the NYC Marathon. I think I’m going to put in for it this year!

I, too, am also a procrastinator at heart. However, I came across a Spanish proverb that has become my “do it now” mantra: “Tomorrow is the busiest day of the week.”
As I transition from “doing tomorrow” to “doing it now” I have discovered that I suddenly have down time because things are done ahead of time instead of at the last minute. I’m learning to relax instead of living on adrenaline.
In the category of Doing Things That Scare Me, a couple of years ago I decided to take voice lessons, as I had always been told that I had a good voice, had always sung in choirs, but hardly ever did solos. My coach had recitals for her students, ages 10 to retired. The more recitals I performed in, though admittedly awful at first, the more confidence I gained. Though I no longer take lessons because of schedule changes, I am singing solos for my church. YAAAAAAAAAAAAAY ME!

So you want to be a knitter. Here’s a true knitting story . . .
When my parents were [a-]courting, my mum spent a long time knitting a jumper (sweater) for dad. It was the early ’60s, and big jumpers were THE thing to wear. Something went a little wrong though, and she finally conceded that it was a touch too big when dad tripped over it while ice skating.
The jumper was unpicked, and TWO new ones knitted from the yarn (waste not, want not). Even though my dad had put on more than a few pounds by this point, both of the new jumpers were still too big.
All true.
